The
Band Lyne – is Canadian bassist/composer Tom Lyne’s
new modern jazz quartet and his first UK outing as band leader.
Having worked as bassist in many great lineups (including The Dave
Milligan Trio, Sophie Bancroft and Kevin Mackenzie’s Vital
Signs), Tom turns the attention to song, improvisation and bass,
and leads us through a collection of his new compositions. Influence
and inspiration comes from modern composers like Wayne Shorter,
Dave Holland, and Curt Weil, while bass players such as Paul Chambers,
Charlie Hayden, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Marcus Miller have made
their impression.
Originally
from Edmonton Canada, Tom Lyne grew up playing classical violin,
jazz saxophone and finally, guitar and bass. He went to study music
at Montreal’s McGill University and then toured Europe and
Canada as jazz bassist and composer. Tom is devoted to original
music and when, in 1988, he met Tom Bancroft at McGill University
studying composition, they discovered a shared passion towards new
music. Tom Bancroft’s individual approach to drumming, composition
and improvisation prooved a powerful partner to Tom Lyne’s
bass playing and they have worked in numerous ensembles together
since. Chick Lyall’s classical piano background and jazz sensibilities
form the basis of a great improvisor and interpreter of music. Awarded
the Creative Scotland Award in 2004, Chick is also a prolific writer
and band leader. Martin Green enters the jazz scene as a highly
talented folk accordionist and creative musical personality. His
credits include John Rae’s Celtic Feet, The unusual Suspects,
and most recently fronting his own electro-acoustic project The
Green Machine, which was the result of recieving the prestigious
'New Voices' commission for young composers in 2005. With this diverse
and colourful assortment of musical backgrounds, this ensemble promises
great fun and marvelous music.
