Dave
Milligan: Late Show (Caber)
John Fordham
Friday June 27, 2003
The Guardian CD of the week
"Lately, the arrival of new musical talents on the
Scottish jazz scene as documented by Caber has become a
bit of a phenomenon - and a joy to critics. When the label
staged its London showcase a few months ago, one of several
memorable performances came from pianist Dave Milligan,
a loose stylistic compatriot of Brad Mehldau and Keith Jarrett,
whose vocabulary has been augmented by years spent on his
local folk scene. He has a technique that opens rich possibilities
in almost any contemporary piano style.
This excellent disc features Milligan with the same sharply
sensitive trio that accompanied him on that occasion - Tom
Lyne on bass and Tom Bancroft on drums - and a remarkably
varied and high-quality original repertoire.
The music includes the rootsy leaping-reel feel of Small
World, the Mehldau-like ballad delicacy of Smile for Me,
the hovering minimalist drama of Piper's Bidding, some rousing
Bancroft bodhran drumming and the Monk-ish chordal whirl
and lopsided runs of Boiler Man, which is about a bloke
who fixes boilers to augment a jazz musician's income, yet
longs to be able to give up jazz in order to fix boilers
full time. If a small scene like Scotland's can hold two
piano giants like Brian Kellock and Milligan, who else is
around the corner?"

Album
Notes
Violins and saxophones; the lead actors of jazz, folk and
classical music seldom perform together quite like this.
The violin can wear many different hats. They include a
genteel instrument of string quartets, the blazing melodic
firebrand of traditional Celtic music, and the hardcore
fusion lead of a Mahavishnu-style outfit. The saxophone
has a similar range of personalities and this band's unique
range of sounds are built round the twin pairs of saxophones
and fiddles that make up it's front line, and the range
of sounds the composer coaxes from them. It's a very specific
sound. Imagine the soundtrack for an fictitious Tarantino
remake of an English TV sitcom crossed with Reservoir Dogs!
Consider an album collaboration between Prince, John McLaughlin,
John Barry and a East European who scores kids cartoons!
This music brilliantly juxtaposes the light and heavy extremes
of it's instrument's ranges to produce something very rich,
very romantic and original.
The
band's personnel represent something of a jazz-folk supergroup
featuring Aidan O'Rourke and Chris Stout, two of Scotland's
pre-eminent fiddlers from the modern traditional Celtic
scene. It also features the great composer and concertina
player/folk jazz pioneer Simon Thoumire to complete it's
folk section. The jazz firepower is wielded by the leader
on guitar, Chick Lyall on piano, Phil Bancroft on tenor
saxophone and Martin Kershaw on alto. All these names are
leading soloists from the Caber Music stable, all with albums
out under their own name and one of the joys of this cut
is the sound of accomplished soloists having a riot. The
rhythm section of Tom Lyne and Tom Bancroft who are two
thirds of the acclaimed Dave Milligan Trio, similarly sound
like they are having a lot of fun - in a groovier, heavier
vein.
